The Romantic Age corresponds to the period between the start of the French Revolution (1789) and the Reform Act (1832) or the accession of Queen Victoria (1837). Romantic literature was regarded as the product of an age of turmoil marked by three premordial revolutions:the American Revolution,the French revolution and the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain.

The Romantics asserted the creative powers of man,whose imagination could shape the environment. Under the influence of Rousseau,it became increasingly clear that it was through nature and a humble life that man could come closer to the primitive state and explore the passions of the heart which could be found there "in a state of greater simplicity" (Wordsworth).

The Age of Romanticism had already been announced by the mid-eighteenth-century poetry of gloom and melancholy. Nature had also started appearing as a fresh source of inspiration in poems. Social concerns were also obviously found in the poetry of Robert Burns,with its rural settings and Scottish dialects.

The Best-known early Romantic poet is William Blake whose two series of poem,The Songs of Innocence (1789) and The Songs of Experience (1794) had gained apparently social attention. He was a prophetic and mystical poet,who rebelled against materialism and the tyranny of laws and rules which killed man's innocence and prevented his creative energy from being released.

The importance of nature for the human mind was celebrated by William Wordsworth. For him,in harmony with his natural environment,man can recover his inner self and reach transcendental insight. This also tries to capture the influence of the memory and of the passing of time on the present: "I wandered lonely as a cloud" illustrates exactly how nature influence human mind and how powerful healing nature could create.

The Romantic Age was succeeded by the time dominated by darkness and social injustice--Victorian Era where only fiction could speak.
