2010 TWILIGHT CONCERT - CHIANGRAI YOUTH ORCHESTRA

For the second time the Twilight Concert will be organized at year’s end. It will take place on Saturday, 18 December 2010 at 5.00 p.m. The audience will have the unique experience of listening to an ARBORETUM CONCERT at VILLA DARAKORN near Khun Korn Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Chiangrai.
Under the baton of Mr. Paramet Lertkasem, the Chiangrai Youth Orchestra will delight the audience with a varied selection of music by Mozart, Worlock, His Majesty the King’s songs, film scores, popular and jazz songs, Thai classical music and Chinese songs arranged for string orchestra. It is a great honour for the CYO to welcome the international renowned British artist, Richard Harvey, as guest soloist for this occasion. He will play on a clarinet, recorders and “Bawu” ancient Chinese instrument.
The beautiful Villa Darakorn Arboretum, which has an area of 11 rais, boasts a fine collection of over 300 tropical and exotic plant species from all over the world.
Visitors will enjoy the atmosphere of tranquility, cool breezes, and musical sounds of nature, especially the singing of birds and the audible sound of free-flowing water in the creek in front of the Villa.
Amateur photographers will find this arboretum very interesting, because they will have excellent opportunities to practice nature photography there.

History of Villa Darakorn and its Arboretum
Villa Darakorn and its arboretum are now owned by Khun Suphavit Piamphongsant, former Chief Inspector-General, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and his wife, Assoc. Prof. Pasinee Piamphongsant, Satit Chula Demonstration School. They were built 21 years ago (1989) by Khun Sawet Piamphongsant, former Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance in the era of Prime Minister M.R. Seni Pramoj. Khun Sawet was an enthusiastic garden lover, who, during his life time, collected flowering plants and exotic plant species from all over the world and planted them in this arboretum. The wide range of exotic plants grown in this arboretum includes Rhododendrons, Maple, Avocado, Magnolia and Giant Fern (Angiopteris Angustifolia). In winter time, a variety of plants are in blossom. Visitors have always been impressed by the beautiful flowers there.
Khun Sawet also built another botanical garden at Baan Pee, Rayong - the “Sobha Botanical Garden”, which has been open to the public since its beginning in 1979.
The Villa Darakorn Arboretum will be open to the public soon. Visitors are cordially welcome.
How to go to Villa Darakorn
The quickest route from Chiangrai city center:
- Drive along Highway No. 1 (Chiangrai – Payao) to Wat Rong Khun,
turn right at the junction and drive along the rural road No. 1208 to Tambon Mae Korn,
then turn left and proceed along the rural road Den Ha – Baan Dong Mada to Khun Korn Waterfall junction, (between km. 15 – 16),
then turn right and drive along the rural road No.1208, which leads to Khun Korn Waterfall.
- After exactly 7 km. one will arrive at Villa Darakorn, 2 Moo 11, Baan Pang Or, Tambon Mae
Korn, Amphoe Muang, Chiangrai.
* A total distance of 32.5 km (20 -25 min.) Khun Korn Waterfall is 11 km. away from the
junction.
The alternative route is as follows:
- From Chiangrai city center, drive along the rural road Den Ha – Baan Dong Mada, which leads
to Amphoe Mae Suay and Chiangmai, for 15.5 km. to Khun Korn Waterfall junction,
- then turn right into the rural road No.1208, drive for 7 km. you will find Villa Darakorn.
* A total distance of 22.5 km. (25 min.).

Guest soloist and conductor
Well-known London artist Richard Harvey graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Music and is highly regarded as a composer and conductor. He has scored countless British TV series, documentaries and films as well as Hollywood’s “Death of a President”. He also contributed to “Da Vinci Code”, “King Naresuan” and “Suriyothai”. His skills continue to be called upon for both live performances and feature films including Lion King and Harry Potter. His classical albums include a Guitar concerto “Concerto Antico” which he composed for John Williams, recorder concertos and more.
He was co-founder of the Conrad Young Musicians Competition. In addition, he is an exceptional virtuoso performer on 700 instruments from around the world; blown, plucked, keyboard, beaten and programmed.
Richard now lives in Surrey and enjoys wintering in Thailand where he pursues his love for world travel and adding to his massive collection of musical instruments from around the world. This will be his second visit to Chiangrai and he will play on a number of musical instruments as outlined in the concert programme.
