Hello all.
Nov. 10, 2012, a Saturday, is the date for the next Chiang Rai Bikers Day Ride.

This date will coincide with some other bike related events in Northern Thailand.  For any of you who aren’t attending any of those, we hope you will join us for a pleasant day ride.

The route for this one has been called by Ian and is looking great .  The route will take us north and west of Chiang Rai, into some great hill/mountain riding.  Ian’s words concerning this route- “I have the route sorted for the November ride and a real cracker it is, too.  Takes in some of the best scenery in CR province.”
Mark your calendars and make your room reservations if you need them.

Maps, stops and other details for that ride will be posted soon.

 Also of note:  The over-nighter to Nan in December is a sure thing.  Detailed planning will begin soon.  If you have input on that ride, please e-mail your advice and experiences to us.  If you would like to attend the planning meeting in early November, let us know what date you can attend and we will try to schedule a planning meeting for a date that works for you.  We will have a rib BBQ and more on the day/evening prior to the Nan ride.  More details coming on that.

This from Ian:
Chiang Rai Bikers 10th November ride. Back roads of Doi Tung.This ride will take in some of the finest scenery in Chiang Rai province, over the wonderful little used (but good tarmac) back roads of Doi Tung.Beware, there are quite a few junctions on this route and it will be easy to take the wrong turn, then you will miss some of the best scenery.Total distance 190 klms approx.Note; Much of this route is not fast (except the highway 1 sections) and will be ridden in low gears, some of it in 1st gear, so it will be a day long ride.Meet at the PTT petrol station on highway 1, in Chiang Rai at 08:30Depart Chiang Rai 09:00.The route. Black is the morning route and Yellow is the afternoon route.

Head north on highway 1and turn left at Mae Chan onto 1089.Go 7.4 klms and stop at Amy Coffee shop for morning coffee and cakes.

After coffee, go 8.7 klms through Huai Ma Hin Fon and turn right here;

Go over the mountain on a minor road and through the Mae Salong Forest Park, then after 12.6 klms turn left here;

You are now on the 1234 heading for Doi Mae Salong.After 6 klms, turn right here (flashing light on the right);

After 6.2 klms, turn right at the King’s Picture, here;

Head down the hill and after 1 klm, take sharp left turn here, uphill:

You are then on the 1338 north.After 7.6 klms turn left here for Samakki Mai;

After 5.9 klms turn right (straight on) follow sign to Samakki Gao;Then after another 1.2 klms turn left here to Huai Pu here;

Then after 6.6 klms go right to Huai Khrai, Mae Chan & Mae Sai;(next three photos/signs are at the same junction)

You should pass through Ban Pha Bur;

At this point (below) you will now go uphill through TEN consecutive hairpin bends (amazing……..);

After 9 klms turn right here to Huai Khrai on the 1148 Royal road (wide smooth tarmac);

After about 4 klms of swoopy fast tarmac, take the right turn up the hill for about 1.6 klms to the King’s Mother’s Villa. Go right up to the top, at the end of the car parking and you will see bike parking up on the left. Down to the left hand side here are 4 little restaurants serving regular Thai lunch food; Kao Mun Gai, Kao Ka Mu, Kao Soi Gai etc.Or, across to the right is the Doi Tung coffee shop that sells huge macadamia nut cookies that are delicious....After lunch, head back the same way on the same swoopy roads, past the turn off (photo above) and keep to this main road with central yellow line.After 10.8 klms from the Royal Villa, turn left uphill here;Signposted to Doi Chang Mub and Mae Sai.

After about 1.5 klms you will come to The Arboretum, take the right fork signposted to Mae Sai here;

You will go over Doi Chang Mub, highest mountain on the ridge here at 1512m (it will be cool in November). There is a great viewpoint over Burma, on the left hand side here at the army camp. Then you come down off the mountain and through an army checkpoint.Tell the soldier you are going to Mae Sai and no problem (they may ask to see passport or driving licence and note the number down).Then moving on, pass the Burmese army camp on the left. You are now on the wonderful 1149 ridge road.The first right turn is signposted to Bahn Pa Hi. If you wish to take this turn, go about 500 metres down into the village, follow the sign to the Village Head man’s house, Khun Alan. He will sell coffee beans there at a very good price, grown by the Akha village people there. Great views from here too.Moving on down the mountain, further on, past more hairpin bends and stunning views, keep going downhill on this road, turn left at the Pa Mee Training Centre, past a couple of small sois, then take the right turn at the bend in the middle of Bahn Pa Mee. Ride down through the Akha village brick road and out past the limestone karsts and past the strawberry farm on the right. Great scenery (photo below is looking back to the mountains).

You will come out on highway 1, about 60 north of Chiang Rai.Turn left, then do a U-turn and head back south. Drive slowly here, then stop and ask the lovely “strawberry girls” when they will have some fresh strawberries.When heading south after passing the checkpoint, Banoffee on the left sells good coffees.Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 10th November.

Thanks to all who participated in the latest ride.  The Nov. Day Ride was a blast.  Thanks so much to Ian for spending the time to explore the different options in that area and coming up with the final route.  Ian, if there was a prize for best route so far, you would have it.

Thirteen bikes and one truck participated in the ride.  I believe the person who came the greatest distance came from Chiang Mai.  It was a slow, lazy day with plenty of stops for picture taking and goofing off.  There were lots of other bike events scheduled for this date so we didn’t have as many as we could have had on another date.  But there is enough interest from those who couldn’t make it that we will likely do this route again in the not too distant future and perhaps, ride it in the opposite direction.

The scenery and views on that route are about as good as it gets in Thailand mountains.  And the weather was perfect.  We sure get lucky with the weather on these rides.

As always, for me, the stand-out feature of the ride was the people.  The ride seems to attract the nicest people; good, exceptional folks that are worth spending time with.

Our first coffee stop was at the Amy coffee house, a few kilos west of Mae Chan where we met up with the full contingent of riders.  From there, we began to get into the more serious scenery.  Some of the earlier route was single lane, although it was two lane road but overgrown to the point of one lane due to lack of use.  Now, those are good roads to find.  Later and higher on the route, some stretches on the route were almost tunnel-like with overgrowth on both sides and overhead.  There were a lot of turns on this route but somehow, everyone made the correct turns and we all stayed on track.  After climbing for a long time, the air temps were quite cool.  Good day to have worn a warmer jacket.  At the highest points on the ride, we were in the tall pine trees, enjoying the scent that those trees put out.  I really enjoy getting into the pines here because it brings back memories of Colorado.

There were some steep drops along the route and most of those involved a lot of hairpin turns where we all just eased around them at a crawl.  Some turns were too tight, too steep to be fooling around taking chances, especially not know if anyone was coming at us from the opposite direction, although we saw almost no traffic on the mountain portion of the route.  We had the place to ourselves.  And of course, we had some of the same sharp turns going up-hill but low gear and keeping power on, we crept around those without problems.  Technically, the route was more difficult than most and a newbie may have had some learning to do but I think all of us had enough experience under our belts that the ride was interesting instead of difficult.

We did stop often and park the bikes to enjoy some of the overlooks.  Some of them were just too darned captivating to not stop and enjoy them.  So, the route took longer for us than it would have for some others who weren’t into the scenery.  And I am sure I saw more picture taking going on with this ride than in any of the past rides.  We also visited a small village to gas up one of the dirt bikes that had a small fuel tank, just so we wouldn’t be pressing our luck on fuel.  Two whiskey bottles of fuel in the tank and we moved on without that worry.  It seems every little village has a house that stocks fuel and that can sure come in handy in the mountains

Lunch was Thai food on Doi Tung.  We enjoyed great food and a fair amount of dawdling and visiting before we saddled up to go again.  After lunch, we made several more stops to get pictures worth having.  Traversing quite a few more ups and down and one long bit of ridge riding, we finally dropped eastward into the Mae Sai valley and made our way onto highway 1, south of Mae Sai.  South of the police check-point, we took one more long coffee break and enjoyed some conversation and we all headed for home, satisfied that we had experienced one of the nicest rides and nicest days out of the year.

This ride report and pics start here-  http://chiangraities.com/index.php?topic=719.msg4521#msg4521

 ยิงฟันยิ้ม ยิงฟันยิ้ม

or those of you who are making the overnight ride to Nan, you may be interested in this hotel in the centre of town, apparently it's only been open for around six months and rooms start from 600 baht per night.

Also immediately after myself and a pal are making a trip to Loas, if any of you know of any good accommodation along the attached route i would be very interested.

Cheers.

Hello all. I hope you are all well.

Reservation period for the BBQ on the 9th is closed now. For those who have said they will attend, the dinner will be held at Woraphat’s place. If any of you do not know where that is, let me know and I will provide directions and a map.

Hopefully, you all have made your overnight reservations for Nan by now.

It appears that we will have several four wheel vehicles with us on this trip. Welcome, to some folks that aren’t bikers but wish to go on some of the trips and who will be with us for the first time!

Chiang Rai biker Bob has scouted the route to and partially from Nan to identify any coffee stop prospects. He has recommended something for the ride to Nan but found the route home lacking in suitable stops for a group so the trip home will be without a scheduled place for the breaks. He did break off of our homeward route at some point and wasn’t able to check out ALL of the trip home so we may run across something that we find to our liking that he didn’t pass. I have attached a few pics of the mid-way coffee stop that Bob sent to me. For those who would rather not open the attachments, you can see the pics on this thread on the Chiang Rai Ties forum- http://chiangraities.com/index.php?topic=861.msg5098#msg5098

Safety note: The 1148 is a fast road for the most part but it does have some surprise hair-pin turns that could cause problems and pile-ups if people are riding too close. A safe distance between riders is especially important on this route.

First stop is the large PTT station after the police check point at Chiang Kham. This place is also the last big fuel point, as the rest of the fuel options on the way to Nan are very small and lacking in most amenities and the quality of fuel at those small stops may be in doubt.

After leaving that PTT and approaching the approximate mid-way point, there is a new coffee shop next to a small Thai restaurant. Travelling towards Nan on the 1148, you will see a sign showing the way to the Thai Laos market to your left just as you enter a small village called Song Khwae (approx.. 80 km's from Nan). The coffee shop is on the right opposite the KTB ATM sign. There is nothing much before or after that would be suitable. Bob has spoken to the girl who runs the coffee shop and has her number so she knows when we may arrive and get some extra staff in to help out. Coordinates are N 19 deg 21.502 E 100 deg 42.297.

Coming into Nan there is a large Esso gas station just after the airport on the right which will be the meeting point for the route back and pick up the 1091 going through the town. Since many of you are staying in Nan for more than one night and not joining us for the ride home, we won’t be looking for, or waiting for, anyone who is not ready to go at 09:00 that morning.

Bob has put together a Google map with turn by turn instructions for us. It does not include the 1097 detour jaunt that several of us will make. His turn by turn itinerary is below:

 ยิงฟันยิ้ม ยิงฟันยิ้ม  ขอบคุณพี่ๆ น้องๆ   ที่ไปแอ่วทริปน่าน ตวยกันเจ้า  ม่วนขนาด ยิงฟันยิ้ม ยิงฟันยิ้ม

The Chiang Rai Bikers over-nighter to Nan was a good time.  We had 13 bikes (some of those were two-up) and four cars/trucks with us.  Thanks to all for the input on routes in and out of Nan, especially David, Phil and Tim.  We weren’t disappointed in the roads or the views.  And special thanks to Bob for running the route a few days ahead of time and scouting out the stops for us.

After the usual meet-up at the PTT, the group moved out for a day of great weather on the road.  After covering the km’s that get you to the good part of the trip, the 1148 offered lots of turns, rises and drops that were exhilarating at points.  I did miss some of the views because my attention was on the road and the sharp turns but the wife was able to take it all in and she especially enjoyed it.  As usual, we made several short break stops prior to lunch.  At the lunch stop, several found a good noodle shop and several others partook of left-over BBQ ribs that were brought along by Pam in the cars.  (Thank you, Pam.  Good thinking!)  I snacked for lunch instead of having a large meal because I wanted to save my appetite for Tony’ Place in Nan.

For most of the morning, the slower riders stayed together in the larger group while the faster riders went ahead in a smaller “fast group”.  In the afternoon, we were strung out a little further with smaller “slow groups” of several riders in each group.  The wife and I brought up the rear, enjoying the warm sunshine of the day.  Nan isn’t that many km’s from CR but the wife and I took most of the afternoon to get there.

Arriving in Nan, we ran into several of the folks who had gone ahead of the pack and after hooking up with them, we headed to Tony’s Place.  Before the evening was out, everyone had arrived at Tony’s for some food and beverage.  Thanks to Tony for opening up for us on his day off.  And he opened early for us each day so the returning riders could get an earlier breakfast and an earlier start.  Tony’s Place ended up being our “base” of sorts for the time we were in Nan.  I think he had one or more of us in his place during most of the hours he was open until the last of us left Nan to return home two days later.  It was kind of cool to be able to go to his place at any time of day and see CR friends relaxing and visiting.  On that subject, the ride was a nice success again in the sense of riders meeting and getting to know others.  It is so cool to see riders meet new riding buddies on these trips and know they will be spending more time together in the future.  What a great way to meet people and see if they are a “fit”.  And also on that subject, we met some really good Nan folks while we were at Tony’s.  I will be keeping in touch with some of those folks just because they are really good people.

Nan.  What a nice little town.  I was impressed by the cleanliness of the town.  Those people care about that town and it shows.  There are LOTS of rooms available in Nan, in about every budget range.  And eateries seemed plentiful as well, with some nice places in the city center and a few that are on the riverbank with nice views.  There are some coffee shops but the place isn’t overrun with them yet, as CR is.  The wife and I had coffee at one that had a sign saying they opened at 08:00 but they were open at 07:00 and served us.  Nan also has a big market that is typical of Thailand towns and the market too was very clean; much cleaner than our CR markets.  Even in the meat and fish section of the market, there wasn’t the normal stench.  We went to the market for coffee at 05:00 (only place open then) and found the market Thai-style coffee shop doing a brisk business.  Two people worked that shop, him making the coffee and she delivering it to the various food vendors at their stalls.

If you’re looking for a slow-paced place to spend some time, Nan is a good choice.  They have about everything you could want, the people are friendly and the town is relaxing.  However, locals tell us that the town is growing fast, land prices are rising dramatically, daily traffic has increased a lot and things are changing.  The locals expressed concern over how long their town will be the great little place it has been for years.  So, if you’re thinking of going, maybe it is best to not wait for several years to do it.

Several of the group made trips to the Nan Riverside Art Gallery south of town and found it worth the trip.  One of our group posted some photos of that on the Chiang Rai Ties forum here: http://chiangraities.com/index.php?topic=861.msg5202#msg5202
  Most of the group ended up doing some touring outside of Nan while we were there and reported some good day rides and nice scenery in the area. I was in extreme relax mode while I was there so I didn’t see the gallery or do any touring but I made plenty of trips to my room for naps.  Sorry, no pics of the napping.

Some folks stayed only one night in Nan and then either returned directly home, did some off-route touring on the way, stopped off to see other old friends or in the case of two of our group, headed off to Laos for some serious touring for the next week.  A few stayed on an extra night in Nan and then left Tony’s Place at about 10:00 the following morning for the trip homewards.  I rode to CR with one other biker and one of the cars stayed with us.  I enjoyed the trip home more than the trip to Nan as I was able to stop and goof off more often.  The 1091, especially the first third or so of the trip, is a really nice ride with lots of good scenery, nice sweeping turns and high-up overlooks.  I stopped often on that part because the views warranted stopping and enjoying them.

A special note here about Tony’s Place, Tony and his wife.  Man, they do have really good food there and the menu is extensive.  I doubt you could eat there and be disappointed that they didn’t offer what you were craving.  I have never seen such a small place with such international food diversity on the menu and he seems to know just how each item is supposed to be prepared.  And surprisingly, to me anyway, he has a good carry-out business with the local Thais.  The place is truly an all-around eatery.  Tony and his folks were extremely gracious, helpful and interesting to visit with.  Tony keeps an UK Internet rock and roll radio station playing on the speakers and he keeps the volume down so he has background music that enhances the experience instead of competing with it.  Some of our local eateries could learn a thing or two from Tony.  As I said, all of the food was great but my favorite was the bacon, cheese and mushroom omelet.  That particular combination isn’t on the menu but they will do what it takes to suit you there without any fuss at all.  Oh!  And the beer crowd reported that the beer was cold, not really in need of ice in the glass.  You can’t beat that!  Tony, my hat is off to you.  You are one of the best, customer service oriented people I have dealt with in Thailand.  Best of luck to you and yours in the future and thank you, so much, for all that you did for our group.

January-  No route has been suggested for the Chiang Rai Bikers Day Ride for January.  The ride will go on the 10th and when we have a route, we will publish it.  If any of you have suggestions, please let us know.  There is also some discussion going on about a dirt bike off-road ride and route in the near future.  Anyone with an interest in that, let us know and we will hook you all up.  I won’t be riding a bike for that but am willing to provide support with the four-wheel Suzuki if needed.

 ยิงฟันยิ้ม ยิงฟันยิ้ม ยิงฟันยิ้ม

Hello all.

The Jan. 10 Chiang Rai Bikers Day Ride is a go. Lacking input from any volunteer route planners for this month, I have called the Fang, Thaton, Doi Mae Salong route for this month. This is a route that we rode previously but we will be running this one in a clock-wise direction instead of the previous counter-clock-wise. Lunch will be at Thaton at one of the riverfront restaurants. No morning coffee stop has been planned at this time but we will find some places that suit us for a break as we go.

If anyone has suggestions for coffee stops, morning or afternoon, let me know. If anyone has a lunch suggestion prior to Thaton, let me know.

Further details, including a route map, will follow when suggestions and input from others has been received.

This is a nice route with lots of good scenery. Cars, trucks, etc are welcome to come along, as always. It is a good day out and a fine opportunity to get familiar with some of the countryside west of Chiang Rai. There is quite a bit of mountain riding on paved roads, lots of twists and turns and some really nice overlooks along this route.

Meeting time is 08:30, starting time is 09:00 and start point is the PTT where we usually meet. Full details on the starting point will follow, for those who don’t know where it is.

Basic route numbers are-
From Chiang Rai,
118 south to
109 west to
107 north to
1089 north and east to
1234 east to
1130 east to
1 south to Chiang Rai

Basic idea of the route is visible on the map below.

If you are late, no biggie. You can catch up with us easy enough. We do try to start out right at 09:00 though.

Anywhere from 10 to 20 riders is the norm. Not always the same people, as some can make it to one but not the next. I don't know yet if the Thai group will join us. If they do, then the numbers will go up some. If we ever get the "perfect storm" where everyone that goes sometimes shows up for the same ride, we will have to find several restaurants to have lunch in. And that will be okay, too.

This is a great route and I am sad I will not be able to attend. These rides are one of the many things that causes me to miss everyone. I will be back mid Feb. if all plans of mice and men go as hoped. Maybe one day we can plan a second overnight to Pai? Very exciting road going up the mountain to Pai.
Ride safe everyone.

I'm looking forward to your return. Been missing your mug.

There is a Pai over-nighter (at least) in the future for the group, during the rainy season, when the town is quiet and the tourists are scarce.
