บริษัทโตเกียว อิเล็กทริก พาวเวอร์ ของญี่ปุ่น เปิดเผยว่า เกิดไฟไหม้ที่บริเวณชั้น 4 ของอาคาร ปฏิกรณ์ที่ตั้งเตาปฏิกรณ์นิวเคลียร์ หมายเลข 4 ที่โรงไฟฟ้าฟุกุชิมะ หมายเลข 1 ในจังหวัดฟุกุชิมะเมื่อเวลา 9.38 น.เช้านี้ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น และหลังคาชั้น 5 ได้รับความเสียหายด้วย
นอกจากนี้โฆษกรัฐบาลแถลงว่า ระดับการรั่วไหลของสารกัมมันตรังสีใกล้อาคารปฏิกรณ์หมายเลข 4 ดังกล่าวเพิ่มสูงขึ้น
ขณะที่สถานีโทรทัศน์NHK รายงานว่า เตาปฏิกรณ์หมายเลข 4 นี้ กำลังเข้าสู่ภาวะที่มีเกิดการหลอมละลาย และมีกัมมันตภาพรังสีรั่วไหลออกมา
