The fifth annual “Twilight Concert” has arrived to celebrate the New Year, performed by the combined talents of CYO, Silapakorn Repertory Wind Ensemble of Silapakorn University, Faculty of Music and Chiangrai’s “Le Petit Band” (led by Dome Thewtong).
The concert will feature two guest conductors - the young rising Singaporean star Kah Chun Wong (now residing in Berlin, he recently won 1st Prize in the 4th International Conducting Competition "Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest") and Damri Banavitayakit (Principal oboist and guest conductor of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra) - alongside CYO’s Resident conductor, Paramet Lertkasem.
Guest soloists will be Damri Banavitayakit (oboist), Daniel Hudson (English violinist), & two young CYO violinists: Wannapatsorn Khampanpoo and Tharathep Chaiwanichkul .
Guest of honour artists from “Le Petit” band (Chiangrai) are the well-known Chiangrai vocalist Nutaporn Wanvinyou and Dom Thewtong (pianist). Two promising young vocalists from Bangkok, Vanisa Busakorn and Prad Maakul Na Ayughya, will also join the orchestra.
This year the concert is based on the theme “Magic Beam” – the title of one H.M. The King’s famous songs. It will be a special occasion on which Chiangrai Youth Orchestra collaborates with ‘Silpakorn Repertory Wind Ensemble and Chiangrai’s “Le Petit” band (led by the versatile, renowned musician Dome Thewthong), creating a total of 65 orchestra members.
The purposes of the Twilight Concert project are to increase the performance standards of CYO and to give its members opportunities to gain valuable experience by working with professional musicians from Bangkok and abroad. In addition, the project hopes to bring quality musical culture to the Chiangrai community.
The last four “Twilight” performances have been well received by music lovers both Thai and foreign, from Chiangrai , Chiangmai & Bangkok – with audience sizes of not less than 300.
This year’s programme will feature a chamber music performance first, followed by the combined orchestra’s performance as the highlight of the evening.
This combined orchestra will delight the audience with a varied selection of music by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, and Brahms as well as famous standard pop songs, Thai classical music, Northern Lanna songs, and His Majesty the King’s compositions - including “Magic Beam” itself, “Love in Spring” and “New Year Greeting song.”
Enjoy the unique experience of an outdoor concert in the beautiful botanical garden at Villa Darakorn near Khun Kon Waterfall. This garden, which has an area of 11 rais, boasts a fine collection of over 300 tropical and exotic plant species from all over the world. You will enjoy the atmosphere of tranquility, cool breezes, and the musical sounds of nature, including the singing of birds and the audible sound of running water in a creek in front of the Villa.

2:00 pm – 3.00 pm You are cordially invited to join a pre-concert guided tour of the botanical garden. Plant specialists will accompany you to have a close look at plants and trees around Villa Darakorn’s botanical garden (this is free of charge).
3:00 pm Music starts with a chamber music performance by ‘Silapakorn Repertory Wind Ensemble.

Further arrangements may be discussed upon booking of concert tickets. A small charge may be made for transportation, departing at 1:30 pm from Doi Chang Coffee Shop at Chiangrai down-town to Villa Darakorn, for a round trip on the concert day.

The conductors and solo artists:
Kah Chun Wong (Guest conductor) is one of Singapore’s most promising young conductors .He has won 1st Prize, as well as the orchestral vote at the 4th International Conducting Competition "Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest ( 2013) ”, also the 2nd prize in the 5 th International Lovro Von Matacic Conducting Competition in Croatia (2011) . He has worked with the Lucern Festival Strings , the Hungarian Liszt-Wagner Orchestra , St. Petersburg Capella Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra ( London)amongst others.
Damri Banavithayakit (Guest conductor and Oboe soloist)
Damri is currently Principal Oboist of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra as well as the BSO’s guest conductor. He is also Dean of Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University, and an active music arranger and Music Director of numerous theatre productions. His conducting credits include “The Man of La Mancha” the “Three Penny Opera” “FAME the Musical” the opera “Dido and Aeneas” and Thai musicals (produced by Dream Box) such as “Mae Nak”.
Paramet Lertkasem (CYO Music Director), founded CYO and Chiangrai Violin Club 12 years ago. He has instructed many hundreds of young musicians on string instruments. He is an important figure in the classical music scene in Chiangrai.
Daniel Hudson (violinist) studied on scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music (London). At home he has performed with the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic & Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, Phantom of the Opera (West End show), and many other organisations. Overseas jobs have included the Sultan of Oman’s orchestra, a Portuguese string quartet, a German production of musical Sunset Boulevard, and a U.S.A. residency at the Kennedy Centre, Washington D.C. He now teaches music in Khon Kaen as well as performing with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.
Dome Thewtong : pianist
While pursuing a Music major at Chulalongkorn University, he was a pianist and leader of the Chula Big Band. Embarking on a career for more than 20 years, he became an active jazz/pop pianist and Music Director / arranger. He was also members of the professional big bands such as Yamaha Sound C.U Big band and has also performed with the BSO as a
pianist. He was also a music producer for several leading Thai pop vocal artists including Coco jazz, Orm-Sunisa Sukbonsang and Numsak . He now lives in Chiangrai and is founder and leader of Chiangrai’s well-known Le Petit Band at Le Petit Café.
Young violinists of CYO who appear as solo violinists are :
Tharathep Chaiwanichkul is a 13 years old and has been with the CYO since 2007. In 2008 he received a music scholarship for three months of violin lessons with Geertje Podevyn in Belgium. He is now attending at Chiangrai International Christian School.
Wannapatson Khampanpoo is a 16 years old. She is attending at Chiangrai Vocational School.
Nataphorn Wanvinyou (vocalist)
Born in Chaingrai . She graduated from Faculty of Communication of
Chulalongkorn University. During her studies, she was a leading vocalist of the Chula Big band. Once moved back to Chiangrai, she founded a Le Petit cafe. Every Friday and Saturday evenings, wine and music lovers gather at Le Petit Café to enjoy nice music and good wine.
Vanisa Busakorn (Vocalist)
Vanisa Busakorn is an active postgraduate music student in voice performance at Silpakorn Universitty, College of Music. Vanisa gained experiences in many performances both in concerts and musical productions. Her highlights include the role of "Papagena” in “The Magic Flute” (Mozart) and a role in Wazad's gang in the opera “ Di Do and Aeneas’’ produced by NUNI Musical Company and BSO, she was also a member of the Suan Plu Chorus that toured Europe and UNESCO. as well as a member of Thai Youth Choir.
Prad Malakul Na Ayudhya (Vocalist)
Prad was a member of a Thai Youth Choir at Thailand Fair 2012-2013. At present he is a member of the BCC GLEE CLUB that performed in the Groot Koob Projecten Christmas Tour in the Netherlands. Prad was second runner-up of RSU SINGING CONTEST organized by Rangsit University, College of Music . He is now studying voice (classic) with Dr. Nicholas Provenzale .
Silpakorn Repertory Wind Ensemble (SRWE) of Silpakorn University , Faculty of Music .The ensemble consists of 12 woodwind players (Flute ,Oboe , Clarinet , Bassoon, Horn )
They are also members of Silpakorn Wind Ensemble which performs concerts throughout the year and also enjoys outreach projects up-country.
Chiangrai Youth Orchestra (CYO)
CYO is a remarkable project founded by the violin teacher Paramet Lertkasem in 2001, providing free violin lessons to hundreds of Chiangrai students (ages between 6 & 18) in several schools in town. The CYO rehearses once a week & continues to grow from strength to strength. Each year the CYO gives its big ‘Twilight’ concert in addition to several mini concert activities. CYO receives support from several groups - music lovers both in Bangkok and abroad. Today CYO consists of 50 members (violin, viola, cello, and double bass), and in recent years four CYO violinists have passed the audition to attend colleges of music in Bangkok to study for professional diplomas .
About the annual Twilight Concert :
The unique “Twilight Concert” project aims to promote quality orchestral music by performing challenging repertoire from classical music to films scores, and by offering a stage for CYO musicians to work with professional musicians from Bangkok and abroad.
The project was designed to be an annual outdoor performance during the winter season. The Twilight Concert was first organized in 2009 at Villa Darakorn’s botanical garden, initiated by owners Khun Suphavit and Khun Pasinee Piamphongsant, who joined efforts with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra’s co-founding member Khun Witaya Tumornsoontorn - together with Khun Paramet - to run the project on a voluntary basis.
The last four Twilight Concerts were a big success, with around 350 guests from Chiangrai, Chiangmai, and Bangkok. Thais and foreignershave been impressed by the quality of the performances. Several professional soloists and conductors have been invited to join the concerts, including: British composer and soloist Richard Harvey, Kah Chun Wong, & American harpist Judith Utley.
History of Villa Darakorn
Villa Darakorn & its botanical garden were built 24 years ago (1989) by Khun Sawet Piamphongsant, a former Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance in the era of Prime Minister M.R. Seni Pramoj. Khun Sawet was an enthusiastic garden lover who, during his life time, collected flowering plants and exotic plant species from all over the world and planted them at this private botanical garden. Most of the native trees are now fully mature .The wide range of exotic plants grown here include Rhododendrons, Maple, Avocado, Magnolia and giant ferns (Angiopteris Angustifolia). In winter time the ambient temperatures are 2c degrees Celsius below those in the city of Chiangrai, and a variety of plants are in blossom. Visitors to this botanical garden have always been impressed by its beautiful flowers.

Twenty minutes from Chiangrai city center, Villa Darakorn is on the rural road no. 1208 located at the end of Baan Pang Or (บ้านปางอ้อ) , Tambon Mae Kon, Amphoe Muang, approximately 7 km after the Khunkon Waterfall junction (15 ½ km from Den Ha Chiangrai) and 4 km before Khun Kon Waterfall. (While driving, just look for the sign “ Khun Kon Waterfall)
